Gresham College has announced the appointment of Professor Matt Jones as IT Livery Company Professor of IT Gresham College. The professorship was established in 2015 and is sponsored by the WCIT Charity.
As the fourth professor of IT, Professor Jones will continue the 425-year-old tradition of delivering free lectures aimed at the public within the City of London and beyond. Gresham College live streams lectures online and delivers them to physical audiences in London, plus there are thousands of past lectures freely available on the college’s website.
In his first series, AI as your overlord: assimilation, acceptance or resistance?, Professor Jones will explore the challenges and possibilities AI presents, blending computer science, psychology, sociology, and history.
Speaking about the appointment, he said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as the Gresham Professor of Information Technology. The new era of AI – the focus of my lectures this year – could usher in a discombobulating time, as we question who we are as humans. Gresham provides a unique – and free – forum for all of us to be involved in understanding and shaping the science of this transformative technology.”
